When times are tough

“Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.” Mark 14.36 The account of Jesus praying in the Garden of Gethsemane is a painful read, as he pleads that he might be spared from the coming agony and yet, in the end, comes to accept what he must go through. When we have to accept something that we don’t want and go through it just the same, perhaps in some small way we can begin to glimpse something of what Jesus went through. It is worth remembering, though, that the words of Jesus are not simply words of resignation to a cruel fate but are words of deep trust in his Father. In fact, at the beginning of this verse (before the words that we are looking at today) Jesus used the intimate word that a child would use for their Father – ‘Abba’. When he conceded that God’s will should take precedence over his own, his words were not spoken with resentment but rather with a deep trust in his Father. Things happen to us that we do not want. We do not have to know why they happen, because we probably never will, but what we can do is to step into whatever difficult situations arise trusting that we are still God’s children, he is still our Father, and that nothing can change this.
