Worshipping when you have done wrong

‘Then David … went into the house of the LORD and worshipped.’ 2 Samuel 12.20

The story of David’s affair with Bathsheba, his command to murder her husband Uriah, and the subsequent death of the child born to David and Bathsheba is a tragic and painful episode in David’s life. However, it is also an episode which reveals not only David’s sin but also the depth of his relationship with God.

We are told that after he discovered that their child had died, despite the fact that he had been fasting and praying for the baby’s life, David went to worship God.  We might think that a more natural reaction would be to complain to God or turn away from him – but not in David’s case.  He was fully aware of his sin and taking full responsibility for his actions, he stood before God and worshipped him.

Sin is never a good idea! Yet thankfully it does not disqualify us from worshipping God.  Far from it – in those moments when we sense that we have failed God and the memory of our sin is real to us, it is the exact time to stand before him and acknowledge him as the God of mercy and grace, and to call upon the wonder of his unfailing love for us.

A healing touch from Jesus can be life changing – which is wonderful! – but if you, or the people you are praying for, are inclined to make any significant change to your lifestyle, please think it through carefully and check it out with a wise friend, doctor or church leader first.
