“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you.” John 15.9
It is easy to gloss over this amazing statement instead of giving it the consideration it deserves. We probably have little trouble believing in the love the Father has for the Son – after all, Jesus revealed a deep bond between them. The Son gave himself totally to reveal the Father’s love to us, so it is little wonder the relationship between them is so strong.
However, when it comes to us being loved by Jesus, we probably have to try a little harder to catch it. We can think of some people that Jesus must love – people who have sacrificed everything for him, or given all they have in the service of others – but what about us?
There are no conditions attached to Jesus’ statement. He does not say we will enjoy his love if we do certain things, but simply that all of us can enjoy the wonder of God’s love to the extent that he enjoyed it.
It is probably completely beyond us to work out why we are so loved, but we can start to believe it is true. In the quiet now, enjoy this truth and let it change you from within as you focus on these words: ‘As the Father loved Jesus, so Jesus loves me.’
