You are not in this alone

‘For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathise with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are – yet was without sin.’ Hebrews 4.15
Temptation can be a very lonely experience. It can often mark the difference between our ‘public’ face, seen by everyone, and the reality going on inside. We want to keep our temptations private as we certainly don’t want anyone else to know about them, but this struggle can cause us to feel we are the only person with these particular temptations.
The Bible speaks about the Holy Spirit knowing our every thought (Psalm 139.2). It is this same Spirit who has seen into the mind of every person, and who inspired Paul to write, ‘No temptation has seized you except what is common to man’ (1 Corinthians 10.13). It is the same Spirit who revealed to the writer of Hebrews that Jesus was tempted in the same ways as us.
The good news in all this is that when you struggle, you are not struggling alone; this is something every person goes through. Surely God will give you the same powers of resistance as Jesus, because if he had ‘super powers’ to which you have no access it would be desperately unfair to encourage you to look to him in times of need.
God knows what you are going through and he is longing to help, so be honest with him.
