“The LORD Our Righteousness.” Jeremiah 23.6
The final title we are looking at in this series is one that occurs twice in the book of Jeremiah. It is a name of God that is a constant reminder of both our need for him and the promise of hope that is with us at all times.
One of the central facts of our faith is that Jesus died for our sins. We are not in a position to do anything about our past, but he is. In fact, he has done something about it already – he has paid for our sins and therefore declared us to be innocent and righteous (right) in his eyes. No matter what we may see when we look in the mirror, when he looks at us, he sees people that he has declared free.
This is the liberating hope in which we live: whatever we think may stand against us, Jesus sees us as being free because of what he has done.
So much energy can go into revisiting our past and so much time can be spent in regret, but regret changes nothing. The only thing that can change us is by facing the truth that Jesus has declared us forgiven and free.
This is the truth you bear within you wherever you go or whatever you have done: because of what Jesus has done, you are righteous. He stamps forgiveness upon every sin you think stands against you.
