You have choices

“…sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.” Genesis 4.7
This portrayal of sin crouching at the door is very graphic. It gives us an image of sin waiting to spring upon us, but also – very encouragingly – the knowledge that this is something we can resist. Sin is not portrayed as inevitable and over which we have no control. Instead it seeks to have control over us but the reality is that we can have control over it.
The word ‘sin’ covers a wealth of actions and thoughts, perhaps all of them summed up by the sense of walking a path that is not God’s path. Something specific may come to mind as you read this, but for now let’s take as an example the way we see ourselves before God.
Throughout the Bible God has revealed his heart of love, and the path he has laid out for us is that we remain in his love. Therefore, it makes sense that not doing so is a sin – but it is a sin over which we have control. We can make a choice to live in the knowledge of the love of God throughout this day, regardless of whether we feel it. Certainly, the temptation is there to believe the opposite – it’s waiting at the door, crouching – but whether we welcome this crouching figure into our arms or kick it off the path that God has laid out for us is our choice.
What choice will you make today?
