‘Now if the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body.’ 1 Corinthians 12.15
You matter – even if you do not think you do! The reason most of us doubt our self-worth is because we spend time looking at other people and appreciating their obvious gifts, and because our focus is on them we fail to pay attention to our own gifts.
This is why Paul’s analogy of all of us being part of a body is so helpful – we are different from one another. Other people may well be able to do things we cannot do, but rather than rejoice in this, we tend to regard ourselves as inadequate and often useless.
If you find yourself thinking like this, sit down and make a list of the things that you can do well, the ways you are a blessing to others. When you read through your list, you will probably conclude that everyone else also does these things, but if you are honest you will admit that this isn’t true. Not everyone does them, nor do they have the inclination or the heart to do so – but you do! This is how God has made you. You are a gift to others, and you matter.
