‘But Jonah ran away’ Jonah 1.3
The story of Jonah is surprising for several reasons, one of which is God’s persistence in sticking with him. God had an important message for 120,000 people in the city of Ninevah, so if Jonah was not to be trusted delivering it God could easily have found someone else – but he didn’t. He stuck with his first choice, Jonah, and went to extraordinary lengths to get him back on track so that he could deliver the message which God had given to him.
There is a message in this for us. We have all been uniquely chosen by God so that he can pour out his love upon us. Within this, he calls us to be people who will bear his presence in the individual and unique settings in which he has placed us. God wants us to touch the lives of those around us through his presence within us.
At times we wander away from God’s path, sometimes in a major way; does this mean that we become useless to him and are cast aside so that someone else can take our place? The story of Jonah encourages us to believe otherwise.
You may indeed wander away and feel as if you have let God down, but no matter how far you feel you have fallen, he is waiting for you to return so that you can bear his presence to those around you in a way that no one else can. You are totally unique and of great value to God just the way you are!
